This is the book's central thesis, and all 21 of the other concepts have been developed to explain different facets of this hypothesis. The hypothesis does not claim that religion is false; it proposes that religion is the first great historical form taken by a universal capacity of the human mind (the theogenic drive), but that this form inevitably freezes (crystallization) precisely because of its success.
The hypothesis is presented under the principle of methodological agnosticism: it makes no claim about whether God exists, only a psychological/historical mechanism for how belief forms, becomes institutionalized, and can reopen.
Note: Paul Dehn Carleton developed a conceptually related framework ("Prototheism") in 2004; it arose independently.
