In Plato, thumos is the "honor/spirited" layer of the soul. Protodism borrows the term but redefines it: here, thumos is the life force behind the human capacity for meaning-production: the motive power behind the ability to feel that something "matters," to orient toward a purpose, to regard something as sacred or of value.
Thumos's default state is channeled through the theogenic drive into a single outlet (a religion, an ideology, a passion). When theolysis occurs, thumos is set free from that single channel, and this release is called thumolysis.
